Reducing Handle Time Without Cutting Corners on Data Protection

Faster calls and stronger compliance are often framed as a trade-off. In a regulated contact centre they are better treated as one design problem.

Average handle time (AHT) is the metric every contact centre watches. In financial services it sits next to a second obligation: personal data must be handled lawfully. Nigeria's data protection framework, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 alongside the earlier NDPR issued by NITDA, applies to every call recording, transcript and customer record an agent touches.

Where handle time is actually lost

  • Switching between systems to find the same customer record.
  • Manual identity verification questions on every call.
  • Typing up call notes and dispositions afterwards.
  • Searching knowledge bases while the customer waits.

None of these are fixed by asking agents to speak faster. They are fixed by putting the right information in front of the agent at the right moment.

Compliance as part of the workflow

The common data protection principles apply directly to this work: collect only what is necessary, use it for the stated purpose, keep it only as long as needed, and keep it secure. A well-designed agent workspace helps by showing agents only the fields relevant to the request, logging who accessed what, and prompting required disclosures instead of relying on memory.

  • Automated call monitoring can flag missing disclosures or sensitive data read aloud while the call is live, not weeks later.
  • An audit trail generated as a by-product of the call reduces the manual evidence-gathering that precedes a regulatory review.
  • Role-based access limits exposure without slowing agents who legitimately need a record.

Teams should confirm their specific obligations, including breach notification timelines, with qualified counsel. The point here is the design principle: the same tooling that saves an agent a minute can also leave a better compliance record.
